Just before the holidays I attended a screening of a sweet short film called 'Glago's Guest', at Disney Features. The director is Chris Williams, who also directed Bolt. During ten minutes or so of fascinating chat (witty banter?), Chris sketched away behind a sloped lectern, then handed me this lovely drawing of the character Glago.

I set out to explore the some of the wider world of Los Angeles, venturing out beyond the particular precincts of the gas-guzzling townlet of mellow Burbank. Riding the bus down Magnolia Boulevard to the LA Metro, I soon found myself standing amidst tourist throngs at the intersection of Highland Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard. This is the Times Square (circa 1994) of Hollywood, where everyone who ever farted on a soundstage has their name cast in a bronze star, embedded in hard marble porridge underfoot. It is an insane random lineage of showbiz luminaries and shadows; Fats Domino followed by Big Bird followed by Lois Weber followed by Tom Hanks followed by Little Jack Little, Marilyn Monroe, The Everly Brothers, Jay Leno, Thomas Ince (who, on a luxury yacht, one summer moonlit midnight in 1924, in the illustrious company of Charlie Chaplin & William Randolph Hearst, met an untimely death by gunshot or heart failure).

The area is glutted with souvenir shops selling Hollywood-themed t-shirts and tcheap disposable tchotchkes, a general aura of dilapidation barely glossed over, as if a new coat of paint had been hastily applied each morning by a chain gang crew, just in time to make the place presentable to the gawking clutches of TVoidal American families. Barkers hawk non-celestial Star Maps, bus tours (see the fabulous homes of Britney & Beckham!) and desperadoes in ill-fitting super-hero/swashbuckler/toon costumes prance about manically, as if their minders were watching, posing for snapshots with the burbling sight-seers. Grauman's Chinese Theater, grotesque creation of an absinthe-besotted German Expressionist in exile, stands as a central attraction, looking as brittle and broken as yesterday's piñata, dwarfed by it's neon neighbor, a Virgin Megastore.

Proceed a dozen blocks West and the wholesome seediness gives way to shiny glass fitness centers and modern office compounds, punctuated, as all of LA is, by car dealerships. Ten minutes walk to the East transforms the trinket mecca into a string of tattoo parlors, pawn shops (a disturbingly Watto-like proprietor quotes me $80 for a blue acoustic guitar, but is down to $50 by the time I'm exiting) and smoke emporiums (in which one can obtain, if one is truly cancerous or otherwise clinically afflicted, the bong or hookah most apt at administering one's medical marijuana). To the immediate North and South are two- and three-tiered residential units dating back far enough to evoke wisps of Raymond Chandler and Old Hollywood, the image one wants to see when dreaming of a fabled silver-nitrite Los Angeles. An aged man with a short shepherd's crook aluminum cane makes his way toward the main thoroughfare one step at a time, pausing after each foot-forward to gaze into Eternity, eking his way to that silver fitness spa in the sky.

On the way back, feeling satisfied at breaking the boundaries of my blue bicycle-bounded world, I wait one whole linear hour for the bus to Lomita (one letter removed from Lolita) Street, cursing like a New Yorker, but molified by the sanguine dilution that defines life in sunny Southern California.

So here it is: I'm jetting to the City of Angels on July 7 (7 Dwarves, 7 eyes of God, 7 Deadly Sins, 7 Stooges, etc). Some folks at the Film Roman Compound offered me a storyboard position and I'm gonna give it my best shots, by ChristOnaBike & Great Caesar's Ghost. Project runs into December. So there it is. And I'm going to live in LA with no car (peals of laughter).

Mid July update: Hi Burbank. Ain't you sweet. And look: a nice shiny blue bike. And a darling pied-à-terre. This is truly a world of great opportunity.

One day during production of VB3, whilst waiting for designs or whatever, I found this remarkably (some would say suspiciously) accurate version of Dr.G incarnate a la Parkey Posey. On another occasion, Jackson Publick had mentioned the actor Toby Huss as possible dream-casting for a live action Monarch. My only experience of Huss is his exquisite comic/tragic performance as Stumpy Dreyfus in the brilliant HBO series CARNIVALE. I killed the production gap by comping up this sketch of Toby/Monarch. Case dismissed.
